SCHENECTADY, USA – New York Democrat Andrew Yang, a successful entrepreneur, is planning to run for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States in 2020 on a platform of giving every American a universal basic income (UBI) payment he calls the “Freedom Dividend”. According to Mr. Yang on his campaign website, “The most direct and concrete way for the government to improve your life is to send you a check for $1,000 every month and let you spend it in whatever manner will benefit you the most.” To pay for this $2 trillion-dollar a year expenditure, Mr. Yang wishes to impose a national value-added tax, or VAT at a rate of 10% on goods and services produced by businesses.

  1. This is a very revolutionary idea. On the surface, it sounds like handing out free money to undeserving lazy people. But I have stated over the last 5 or 8 years that jobs are being replaced by automation, and yet the people who need jobs has not decreased, has not remained static, but has increased. And these jobs that don’t require hired people still need people as consumers. So where should the income come from from people who have no jobs but still have needs that these businesses still exist to service?

At some point in the next 200 years or 300 years virtually all jobs will become obsolete and nonexistent. The transition to that kind of a strange new economy has already begun. I assumed people would be horribly damaged during the Great Transition – the increase of homelessness, violent crime, poverty and the like. But something of this kind might be the necessary bridge to cover the chasm between those two economies, the free-market capitalist economy we have today and whatever economy we’re heading to tomorrow. I’m going to have to do extensive research on this idea.

I heard about this last year on the news (probably MSNBC), recorded it, ignored the recording, forgot about the recording, and virtually forgot about the idea as it seemed more fanciful than realistic. Perhaps not!

  2. We do not need another hand out from the government, we need better teachers in our schools, equal pay for women and men, more jobs, less red tape for self employed, and less taxes. Show us how to fish and stop all these government hand outs. $1000 dollars check every month will increase my tax bracket, I ended up paying more taxes in April. The ideal sounds great but why make our grandchildren pay for our mistakes. America will be zillions and zillions of dollars in debt, that’s a government shut down. Who will help America, the man is running a campaign off of this country greed. Trump did it off of racism and won the votes. Free money moves people no matter the race or status. Ask FEMA, after hurricane Imra everybody in Florida got a EBT card that took the time to stand in line for hours. I will not sell my vote. Give me a candidate that is honest with the country “America is Not so Great, we got problems so let solve them”

  3. I have a few questions. Where will this money come from? From what age to what age do you get money?

    • Good questions! The money will come from the federal government (taxes); it shall be given out to the “swineherd”; and they shall use it to “stimulate” the local & national economy. So, we are talking about over 10% of GDP.

  5. I found out this ideal is not new. Google micHael tubbs, black mayor in Stockton CA. The mayor got a grant to select 100 low income family to give $500 free a month. *UnivErsal basic income* idea from the 1700. The center on budget and policy priorities says *Universal* basic income program handing all 300 million Americans $10,000 a year, or $830 a month, would cost $3 trillion, nearly double federal budget. Our national debt is $21 trillion and counting. If the private sector funds this theory in our poor community it might work, but can we trust that people will do the right thing and put the money back into the economy. Article on MSN money.

  6. This is communism in the great United States of America. This cannot be allowed this is not what our country stands for. This country was made on the idea of the pursuit of happiness it is not the job of the government to support you people would become very much like leeches. Not to mention you’re paying to pay yourself it’s coming out of your taxes you’re giving up money to get it back at a later date. This is communism in the great United States of America.
